The Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies elects new Officers:

ANHS to be headed by Mahendra Lawoti

 

 

The Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies (ANHS) held its annual council and general meetings and elected new officers.  Professor Mahendra Lawoti (Western Michigan University) has been elected the president of the ANHS for 2006-2009.  Professor Jim Fisher (Carleton College) is the secretary while Professor Arjun Guneratne (Macalester College) is the Treasurer.  The meetings were held in Madison, Wisconsin from October 19-21, 2006.

 

The association brings together scholars and others interested in Nepal, Tibet, the Himalayan areas of North India (Kashmir, Ladakh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh etc.), Bhutan, North Pakistan and adjacent mountainous areas. 

 

ANHS is centered in the US, but its membership is worldwide.  Members are from North America, East Asia, Oceania, Africa, Europe, South Asia and the Himalayan area.  The association was established in 1971 and produces a biannual journal Himalaya: The Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies, which publishes peer reviewed articles as well as informational and general interest materials. The association promotes scholarly cooperation among people and scholars working in the Himalayan region.

 

Members of the executive council are as follows:

· Professor Arjun Guneratne (Macalester College), Treasurer, Co-editor of Himalaya, ex-officio

· Professor Barbara Brower (Portland State University), Editor of Himalaya, ex-officio

· Professor Tom Robertson (Wooster Polytechnic Institute), Book Review Editor of Himalaya

· Professor Anne Rademacher (New York University), member

· Professor Susan Hangen (Ramapo College), member

· Professor Mark Liechty (University of Illinois at Chicago), member

· Professor Jim Blumenthal (Oregon State University), member

· Professor John Metz (Northern Kentucky University), member

 

Various committees were reconstituted and formed during  Membership, Conference, and Connection committees are headed by Professors Arjun Guneratne, Tom Robertson, and Susan Hangen respectively. 

 

Marketing committee composed of Professors Bruce Owens, John Metz, Anne Rademacher, Tatsuro Fujikura, Jim Blumenthal and Barbara Brower will elect a chairperson soon.
