Development Nepal

Development and Stability

Editorial

We are happy to present you with the new-look of Development Nepal.  After few months of reorganizing ourselves and reconstructing the website, Development Nepal is again geared up to continue its publication.  As most visitors of this website already know, Development Nepal is steadily growing as a web-based journal covering wide array of research findings, opinions and experience, current issues, and other information pertaining to developmental processes in Nepal. Development Nepal now aims to take this effort one step ahead. By initiating an effort to grow gradually as an interactive forum both online and offline, Development Nepal foresees itself as a common platform/ loose network of the researchers and practitioners engaged in Nepal’s development. The ultimate objectives of Development Nepal are continuation of information dissemination, research based developmental policy advocacy, and facilitation of developmental project formulations at grass root level.

Like most other areas, “Development” in Nepal stands at a critical juncture.  The usual pattern of development practice is disrupted, and both state and non-state actors involved in Nepal’s development are finding it extremely difficult to give continuity to their routine activities or implement new programs.   The course and methods of development are altering fast.  Indeed, these are extremely trying moments in the half century old history of “development” in Nepal, but development has not come to a standstill.  Development aid continues to flow in, and organizations are devising mechanisms to work in the new environment.  Researchers continue to do their exploration as well.  Our colleague Amod Pokhrel, an environmental scientist, and a doctoral student at Berkley spent three months recently in the field in Kaski district, investigating the risk factor for Cataracts and Tuberculosis.  Upon his return, Amod shared his experience with Development  Nepal: “Initially I had to go through several hassles but at the end it was ok, I got cooperation from all sides”.  Amod’s experience is far reaching and in the truest sense imparts some reasons for hope to all practitioners and researchers engaged in Nepal’s developmenthope for an conducive environment for development practice and research and hope for co-operation and consensus between development actors.

Development Nepal’s reorganization builds on similar aspirations, and we are reenergized to build upon our ongoing endeavors. Adding on the energy, entry of Sumit Pokhrel as an Editor, has brought in new dimension to Development Nepal.  Sumit brings in over six years of relevant experience.  A graduate of Southern Illinois University and Kathmandu University, Sumit has professional experience working for non-governmental organizations (NGO), consulting firms, and academic research laboratory in diverse environmental and development fields. His primary interests are energy and environment; and local developmental effects of global decisions.

Please take a moment to go through the website.  Please share with us what you have—researches, stories, opinions, thoughts, pictures—that relate to Nepal and Development.  We will be happy to share your contribution to the benefit of a wider audience interested in Nepal’s development.

We take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and encouragement.  With best wishes and regards,
